It’s FINALLY HERE!! The bulletproof intermittent fasting blog post I’ve been promising for awhile! I had to do a lot of research to make this blog post, so bare with me as I cite A TON from other amazing blogs. I totally encourage you to check out these blogs and deep dive into these topics so you can make an informed decision as to which method of eating will be best for you.  As always, make sure you’re picking something that’s MAINTAINABLE LONG TERM and not a quick fix 🙂 Rule of Thumb: If you feel tortured on the first few days and feel like you could never do it, DON’T CONTINUE! But hey, that’s just my opinion 😉 Now let’s get to it…can you have bulletproof coffee during your fasting period when intermittent fasting?!

What is the bulletproof diet?

Before we talk about bulletproof coffee and intermittent fasting, let’s first address the question…what IS the bulletproof diet anyway?!

To really DEEP DIVE into the bulletproof diet, I HIGHLY recommend subscribing to this blog. It’s the ultimate go-to for all things bulletproof, whether it’s bulletproof coffee, bulletproof fasting, or more details on the bulletproof diet and weight loss.

In this blog post, he goes on to explain…

“The Bulletproof Diet supports fat loss and muscle maintenance, all while lowering inflammation. It’s also designed to help balance blood sugar and hormones, plus increase your energy levels and cognitive function.

The thousands of people who have tried the Bulletproof Diet have reported things like:

  • More energy
  • Better focus and concentration
  • Fat loss
  • Muscle gain
  • Better mood
  • Increase in overall happiness
  • No more food cravings
  • Better performance at work
  • Better performance at home (wink wink)

You will feel full for hours on the Bulletproof Diet with no food cravings or loss in energy. This is not your grandma’s low-fat diet. Instead, you’ll focus on eating high-quality, nutrient-dense foods that fuel your body.

The Bulletproof Diet is an abrupt departure from the Standard American Diet (SAD). Instead, the BP Diet focuses on healthy fats, antioxidant-rich vegetables, and high-quality proteins that feed your body at a cellular level. But going from cheesy puffs to covering your plate in veggies isn’t always an easy transition. The steps will help.”

If you really wanna deep dive into this way of eating, definitely check out his blog for more info…I literally am learning ALL THE THINGS about bulletproof dieting and the different meal plans by reading his blog in depth. Again, you can find it here.

What is intermittent fasting?

Now onto something I feel very well versed in 😉

Intermittent fasting in a nutshell is simply a method of eating in which you eat within a condensed time period and fast the rest of the time. Example: Eat from 12-8 (8 hour eating window) and fast from 8-12 the next day (16 hour fasting window)

Here is another blog post I wrote that goes in depth about intermittent fasting for women:

A lot of people refer to this as the “intermittent fasting diet” but the reason I LOVE intermittent fasting is because it’s NOT a diet.  It’s not telling you WHAT or HOW MUCH to eat, it’s simply telling you WHEN. I like to think of it as a method of eating, or loose guidelines to follow (that YOU set for yourself!)

This blog post goes in depth about the different eating schedules you can try with intermittent fasting:

As explained in the blog above, I HIGHLY recommend starting off with the 16/8, or “leangains” intermittent fasting schedule.  It’s the one that will most likely fit your lifestyle the easiest, while the others are a bit extreme.

BTW–if you haven’t yet, make sure you register for my next live How to Do Intermittent Fasting Workshop here, where I’ll DEEP DIVE into this topic so you can have everything you need to really rock this style of eating and feel confident!

What is bulletproof intermittent fasting?

Bulletproof intermittent fasting (or bulletproof fasting) is definitely different than plain intermittent fasting.  The simple difference is that it uses brain octane oil and a little bit of grassfed butter (aka, bulletproof coffee) in your coffee to push you into mild ketosis.

This video goes more in depth about bulletproof intermittent fasting.

Note: I disagree with his opinion that plain fasting leaves you hungry.  I personally find my fast to be insanely productive, and don’t really get hungry till I actually eat around 12PM.  Everyone is different, so making any generalizations is a little bold, but he does know his science, so gotta give that to him 😉

So instead of just having zero calorie beverages or sticking to the “under 50 calorie rule” (where you have under 50 calories during your fasting period–which can be a pre-workout, cream in your coffee, etc) you’re having more calories (roughly 150-250) but of pure fat.

But Meg…doesn’t this break your fast?!?! I’m SO CONFUSED!! Bare with me, and read on 😉

Does drinking bulletproof coffee break your fast during intermittent fasting?

I found a bunch of interesting reads on this topic while doing research for this blog post, but really liked the take on it from this post quoted down below.  They truly encourage YOU to choose your opinion on the question…does bulletproof coffee break your fast?

Here’s some of the info from this blog…

“Don't all of those fats and calories technically break the fast?  This is where the argument truly begins…

If you Google “how many calories breaks a fast” you will come up with hundreds (probably thousands… I didn't dig that deep…) of different answers.  There seems to be a general consensus that anything under 50 calories is okay, and even up to 100 calories will keep the body in a fasted state.  BPC – my version anyway – is over 230 calories. Fast-breaker, right?

Go back to the insulin discussion.

Ingesting carbs and/or protein will stimulate insulin production, but ingesting fats will not.  Since fat does not impact blood glucose levels, BPC Fasters can legitimately argue that consuming their beverage of choice allows them to remain in a fasted state.”

They go on to give their opinion, which I think I’m personally going to try out this week!

“So which side of the argument do I fall on?

It honestly depends on my day.  If I am working out in the morning then I choose to do so on a completely fasted stomach – water and maybe some black coffee only.  This is a result of experimentation, and what I found is that when I was drinking BPC before workouts, my body was using the dietary fat as fuel instead of my stored body fat.  Once I started working out on a fasted stomach and consuming BPC post-workout, I noticed a change in my body composition.

On my two rest days a week, I enjoy BPC first thing in the morning, and nothing makes me happier!  Regardless of what time I'm enjoying this amazing, creamy coffee, I typically do not eat anything until around 4pm.  This shortened feeding window has happened naturally for me, and this method of intuitive eating is exactly what I guide all of my Ketogenic Living nutrition clients to adapt to: listen to your body, and feed it – with lots of health fats – when hungry.”

Another point of view when it comes to bulletproof coffee and intermittent fasting…

Sara Solomon, the fasting QUEEN shares her opinion in this video.

Fasting, in general, works because you keep your insulin levels low enough such that you can burn fat. Fat won’t cause your insulin to go up, so TECHNICALLY it won’t disrupt your fast.

So TECHNICALLY, no…it won’t break your fast 😉 Go ahead and enjoy your full fat coffee my #prettyawkward friends!

(BUT CAUTION…read on so you don’t make a big mistake a lot of bulletproof coffee lovers make when practicing intermittent fasting!)

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Real quick, let’s explain what the heck bulletproof coffee even is 🙂

I had bulletproof coffee for the first time a year and a half ago when visiting friends in Florida, and LOVED it.  It kept me full for HOURS, and just tasted SO DANG GOOD…I was HOOKED. But for some reason when I returned home, I didn’t have it!

After researching for this blog post, I’m definitely going to start implementing it into my mornings a few days a week to experiment, and see how my body feels having it before my workouts, and how much longer I can push my fast because of it!

What is bulletproof coffee and which bulletproof coffee recipe should I try?

Bulletproof coffee simply is adding lotsa great fats into your coffee 😉 But, pretty specific kinds! See a good go-to bulletproof coffee recipe below!

  1. Brew or buy hot coffee.
  2. Using a blender (not a spoon), blend in two tablespoons unsalted, grass-fed butter, as well as 1 tsp-2 tbsp of Brain Octane or XCT Oil. Start slow with the oil and build your way up to avoid disaster pants.
  3. Enjoy.

I’ve seen a ton of variations when it comes to bulletproof coffee, and you can get lost on Pinterest, starting with these boards 🙂 Have fun, but I warn you…you’ll be on this FOREVAH!

Where can you get Brain Octane Oil? A simple google or amazon search will give you LOTS of different options, but this one seems to be the most highly recommended, and the one I recently bought to try!

Here are some bulletproof coffee benefits

I’m more of a visual person, so here ya go 😉

WORD OF WARNING if you’re drinking Bulletproof coffee during your fasting period

One of the biggest mistakes people will make when drinking bulletproof coffee during their fast, is not subtracting those calories/macros from their total daily calories.  While it’s not technically “breaking your fast” because it doesn’t raise insulin (since it’s pure fat), it still adds to your daily caloric needs.

So make sure you’re counting the calories in your bulletproof coffee, and factoring it into your macros for the day if you’re counting macros.

If you’re new to macro counting, here’s a blog post on tracking macros.  You can also get my free find your macros guide here to get started.

Tell me about you! Do you practice the bulletproof diet and intermittent fasting? Will you start having bulletproof coffee during your fast? Let me know!
